Uptime guarantees became something of a joke around early 2002. Many web hosting providers were marketing their "awesome uptime guarantee" as the second coming. The punchline was that customers were later informed, via the fine-print hidden in a legal form, they could only claim 10% (-/+) of their monthly subscription fee for significant downtime.
